This week has been a hectic one and as a distraction from work I thought I’d try out (love it or hate it) the world of Threads. Yeah I did it, I was one of the 100 million that joined within 4 days of launching. I can’t get one person in my house to pick up their own pants off the floor, but here’s Zuckerberg tempting us over like kidnapper with a bag of Jelly Babies and a van full of puppies. Chewing up twitter for breakfast along the way.
So what is Threads? Threads is a social media app designed to provide a vibrant and friendly space for creatives to engage in conversations, share their work, and connect with like-minded individuals. It offers a departure from the polished and overly curated nature of platforms like Instagram. Threads aims to cultivate a supportive community where users can express themselves freely and build lasting relationships. I know what you’re thinking, don’t they all start off like that?
Sceptical and with a side order of FOMO, I ventured in just to be nosey. To my surprise I was hooked and lost 3 hours reading the musings of people I hadn’t seen on instagram in years. Algorithms and god knows what have hid so much from me I actually forgot these people and companies existed. I spent the first few days giggling at some people who had clearly ventured on the the wrong social media platform but then found my people. I also found that Threads gives you a nice little prison number linked to your instagram. Weird but whatever floats your boat Zuckerberg.
Threads proved to be a breeze to navigate.
Unlike other platforms, I didn’t feel the pressure to meticulously curate my content or obsess over every detail. Threads embraced the imperfections and celebrated the raw essence of creativity. It provided a safe space to share my work, thoughts, and musings without the need for a polished facade. I don’t have to sing and dance (bye bye reels), no polished images and funny captions, no carousels (unless you want to) and no over thinking. I can go on verbally vomit everything in my brain all over the 300 people that follow me. Yeah that’s right 300 people, I’m kind of a big deal don’t you know.
No DMs (yet) so the world can see what you write so play nice.
What truly sets Threads apart is its emphasis on building genuine connections and fostering a supportive community. From the moment I delved into the threads, I felt a sense of camaraderie among fellow creatives. Don’t get me wrong there are already bots and stupid people but that’s going to happen.
Looking forward to the new features like being able to edit a post so we will see where this takes us. By next week I may have to eat my words. Elon Musk may have sued the ass of Zuckerberg by then or it may well implode and take us all with it. Who knows.
UPDATE: 1 week on and I really enjoy a dose of Threads. Not as much doom scrolling as the first week but still really enjoying meeting some new creatives on there. More bots and scummy posts but mute and move on seems to work for me.
