Theatre wedding without the theatrics
The Lowry Theatre, in the heart of Media City, Manchester is the perfect backdrop for an Autumn theatre wedding. With unrivalled views of Salford Quays and creativity at the heart, it is a wedding photographer’s dream. Getting married in a theatre may sound dramatic, but this wedding was a prefect mix of family orientated fun and sophisticated elegance.
Act One
Taking centre stage…Dominic and Christopher. The lead roles in the day’s performance. They had previously planned a wedding with an earlier date, but like so many others, was hit by the pandemic. So with a shiny new date the wedding could finally take place. The wedding ceremony was held upstairs in the Hexagon Room. Access is by a vibrant orange and purple internal bridge, great for a group shot. The room has views overlooking the quays, and the large windows flooded the room with light. The grooms decided to opt out of the traditional being walked down the aisle with parents and went for a more modern approach. They walked each other down the aisle, as equals.
The drinks reception provided time for some mix and mingle shots. Friends and family being at the heart of this wedding, meant we needed time for some all important family shots. The Lowry theatre has panoramic views of the city so these big windows came in handy for lighting everyone. We snuck out for some couples shots across the bridge and in front of the theatre. It really is a dramatic backdrop. Unfortunately a bus decided to park outside which did block the front view. It also had a massive sign saying “menopause bus” so we moved back inside. In addition to the cityscape outside the inside of the theatre is perfect for some quiet moments.
Curtain Call
Walking in to the The Compass Room, under a canopy of fairy lights, you can’t help but smile. It’s beautiful. The Groom and Groom were held behind a curtain until all the guests had found their seats. Well it is a theatre wedding after all. We patiently waited for the grand entrance and the audience erupted to a standing ovation for the newlyweds. Then the speeches. These were emotional and there were plenty of laughs but also plenty of tears. Missing family have their own table lit with candles that burn all evening, We were all reminded how lucky we are to live in a country that recognises love for what it is. How fortunate we are that times have changed.
The evening kicked off in style with a band and a DJ who made sure that the dance floor was never empty. Impromptu singing, Tina Turner dancing and lots of gin is how I’ll remember the final act at this elegant theatre wedding.
